Are You Squeezing The Juice Out Of Your Logbook?

Learning a new system is challenging for everyone. Learning is a process of repetition and as the famous life coach 'Tony Robbins' once said, "very rarely does a dabbler succeed". He's right, if we only do things on occasion, we will only get average results. But if we sink our teeth into something and truly understand how things work, then not only will we achieve higher personal satisfaction, but great success.

The same is true in your business and it is great that you're joining us in this digital movement! Today moving to digital and away from a paper-based system is even more vital, but the key to this entire process is being able to maximise the system's potentials and harness the opportunities within your business. 

You've made a calculated decision to use SeaLogs for your business, now it's time to make sure you get the most out of it! How do we do that? By throwing a rope around the content that has already been added during the trial period, and reviewing that information in the reports section. 

In the Engine Room section of the logbook at the end of each day, you input the 'End Engine Hours', these readings default across to the next days 'Start Hours'. 
If you notice your engine using oil, every time you add oil, you enter it into SeaLogs. Then in time, this data accumulates and becomes more and more valuable for your business.

Here is an example of a vessel that has been using SeaLogs for over a year. The company had just put a new engine in their boat at the same time they began digitally recording information in SeaLogs.

As you can see above, this boat was used on occasion and the red line represents the average run time per day. The black line shows us when oil is added. 
Now over the space of a year, you can see that during the busiest time of the year - Christmas time, when the boat was working flat out each day, 500ml oil was added on March 4th. 
The boat continued to operate and more oil was added, only a few days later. Although the boat's use declined from the peak in December, the oil usage was consistent until the issue was fixed, around the middle of March... or so they thought. The boat continued to operate, carrying passengers each day, yet only a few days after the fix, more oil had to be added! 

In a busy operation, often with multiple Masters/Skippers, little things like this can be the difference in thousands of dollars in lost or poorly spent revenue. 
You want to have a birds-eye-view when running a business, not only on the condition of your vessels but spotting trends and any issues before anything evolving into a major disaster! 

Below are 3 tips to access the Hours Run and Oil Report within your logbook: 

1. Go to the report: Main menu - reports - Engines.

2. Select the vessel/s and options available. - Run Time, Oil added, fuel usage and show more.

3. Review your report, you can download the numbers at the top right of the page.
